Custom Orders
We’ve begun accepting limited custom orders in our Etsy shop. If you like any of our existing products, but want a different color card stock or stationary paper or have specific art work you want included, we now can handle those requests directly through Etsy. To request a custom order, please visit our shop at https://mythrilmade.etsy.com and click the “Request Custom Order” button to send us specifics on your custom request. We’ll get back to you with more information and costs.

We’re still developing out our custom hand-set type products and building out our studio and equipment to provide completely hand-made and custom printed note cards and stationary, stay tuned for some updates next month (such as our recently acquired Chandler & Price press) and expanded products lines this summer!

A lot of you probably think “These guys are all about middle-earth, what about all the other worlds that deserve attention?”. A lot of you are correct, and while middle-earth is certainly where we spend most of our time, we also venture into other worlds, and soon we’ll be venturing into the world of Star Wars with our annual May the Fourth Be With You Mythic Radio Event! May 4th (get it, May Fourth…May the Force…?) we celebrate with a day long play of the music of Star Wars and the brilliance of John Williams (and others) who created the iconic music that brought those movies to life.

One of our best sellers is our letterpress “Have Yourself a Merry Shire Christmas” card featuring a hand-drawn shire home, which we’ve already re-created in our Happy Birthday card (which has been selling really well too!). We’ve now created a host of other event cards with the same artwork and same shire art style expanded to include Mother and Father’s Day, Graduation, Get Well, Congratulations, and similar cards to cover every event and card-worthy moment. Heroes and Mortals Radio

Epic fantasy and sci-fi radio forged from the heroes and mortals of history and myth!

March 25th is coming up and why is that special? That’s the day Frodo (with a LOT of help from Sam, the rest of the Fellowship, and all the free people’s of middle-earth) destroyed the One Ring by tossing it in to Mount Doom, destroying Sauron’s increasing grip on middle-earth. March 25th has become a holiday among Tolkien fandom and by way of The Tolkien Society has been dubbed “Tolkien Reading Day” where fans read their favorite passages and offer up a toast “To The Professor” to honor and celebrate the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. We too celebrate, but with music!

Starting March 24th, tune in to Heroes and Mortals Radio for 3 days of specially curated music and audio inspired by Tolkien’s middle-earth, from audio clips and readings to prog rock and contemporary music, film and game soundtracks and so much more. The music of middle-earth is what inspired us to create our radio station and we’d love to share that music with you. If you need a soundtrack while you destroy your own ring of power (pro tip: throw it into the fires of Mount Doom, other fires won’t do), tune in to HAMR.

MYTHRIL MADE NEWS and PRODUCTS

Last month we announced we are creating custom hand set letterpressed personalized notecards and prints. Hand set type is how the creators of moveable type printed hundreds of years ago, one letter at a time using wood (or in our case metal) molds of each letter, symbol, and character. While we have the letterpress equipment, hand made paper, natural inks and foils, to create everything, what we didn’t have were a variety of individual type faces. Luck was shining on us as we found a local book binder in Portland, OR who was getting rid of some old inventory, including two classic Hamilton Type Cabinets, full of hand set type, which we were able to grab at a very (very!) reasonable price. Our hand set type project is now geared up, we’ll be identifying the type faces we have and working up samples over the next few months!

MYTHRIL MADE NEWS and PRODUCTS

We’re excited to be working on a new product line that will both test our skills and showcase what we most enjoy doing, creating handcrafted products from scratch:

Hand set letterpressed personalized notecards and prints.

With hand set type, rather than having a physical plate made from a digital file and film negative, to use in printing, each letter is set by hand from a pre-cast type set, just as the masters of old did. Due to the nature of this type set we’re reserving this for personalized custom products, using the highest quality paper, unique product options, and of course printed by our own Master Printer. The more handcrafted the process, the more we enjoy making it, the more authentic the product, and the more we feel we’re crafting and creating just as the dwarves and elves of middle-earth did. We’re currently nailing down our process and product options so keep an eye out in the upcoming months for this “First Age” line of products from us.

Tolkien’s birthday with a day long play of music and audio inspired by middle-earth. Given one of us is a web designer, it took an unusually long time to get our own site up, but, we have one now so bookmark it, check it often for more frequent updates, and for access to your subscriber content which is only for our newsletter subscribers (see below for more info).

On the product side, we have quite a few new products and designs in the pipeline but we’re most excited about our high-end custom personalized products coming out early next year (check back in Jan and Feb for more details).

Last month we announced The Foundations of Fantasy: Celebrating the authors and stories that built the foundations of modern fantasy by reproducing and reintroducing out of print and hard to find classic literature, handcrafted to honor the printmakers and artists that helped bring their tales to life.

This is an ongoing project for us and the first book in the series is The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle. Special Announcement: Coming Soon to Mythril Made, The Foundations of Fantasy!

Introducing The Foundations of Fantasy Book Series: Celebrating the authors and stories that built the foundations of modern fantasy by reproducing and reintroducing out of print and hard to find classic literature, handcrafted to honor the printmakers and artists that helped bring their tales to life.

The first book in our Foundations of Fantasy series is the 1933 edition of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, written and illustrated by Howard Pyle. First published in 1903, it was republished in 1933 and named the “Howard Pyle Brandywine Edition”, which will ring a bell for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien (who was 11 years old at the time of the first print edition) as the Brandywine River is one of the most important waterways in the Shire and the surrounding lands of Tolkien’s middle-earth.

This book is long out of print and very difficult to find but we have a copy and we’ve begun the process of scanning and retyping each page to reproduce the book in total with classic typesetting, rescanned high-resolution images of the original printed artwork, handmade letterpress inserts, and additional content alongside the original text and art.

Starting in December, only for subscribers to our newsletter, we’ll be releasing at least one chapter digitally each month in serial format on our website so you can read this seldom seen work and enjoy the story as we work on volume one of the custom print edition which will be available next year.

We heard you all clamoring for content (or maybe we imagined it, that is what we spend a lot of our time doing) so figured we better get on it.  Below, and monthly, find information on new and upcoming products from Mythril Made, get early notice on upcoming sales, and read about what you’ll be listening to on Heroes and Mortals Radio!  Now that the screams have quieted, lets get down to it.

New Mythril Made Products

We had a busy summer and have created a slew of new products and because we’re huge Tolkien nerds, all our new products are themed around middle-earth and the shire.  Here are the highlights:

  • Bookmarks: Two four-bookmark sets with shire homes in spring and winter watercolor designs.
  • Coasters: Rubber non-slip coasters (for home or car) with shire and Prancing Pony Porter designs.
  • Mousepad: A mousepad with a custom drawn map of middle-earth.
  • Mugs: It’s getting cold, enjoy those warmed drinks in a series of shire home and shire door themed mugs or our one-of-a-kind thermal heat-changing mug that reveals the Hidden Door to Dwarfdom (based off Tolkien’s Door of Durin).
  • Totes and Bags: Two new tote bags with the quote “Not all those who wander are lost. Some are reading” (and a “…Some are shopping” version), and our newest product, a wine bottle bag featuring a familiar shire home and the phrase “Pairs well with mushrooms, bacon, and unexpected guests”.

We take a lot of pride in our products, particularly our letterpress cards and when we get feedback like the kind comment below, it truly encourages us to keep creating.  From a happy customer who purchased our “Rumi Love” letterpress card:

It has risen!  The Annual Heroes and Mortals Radio Mythic Event, Halloween Soundtricks is here!

Our annual Halloween celebration of spooks and sounds, and spooky sounds, will air October 29th – 31st starting each evening 5-6pm (see the full schedule here).  From classic radio program favorites like Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds and Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, to one of our favorite podcasts, The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast, to haunting and horrific music, it’s sure to be an event that will raise the hair on the back of your neck…or possibly the dead themselves!
